Rationale why four Sectors:

Education:

Knowledge is the source of honor and dignity for a human being, even the very name ‘human’ becomes bright from it. "Saadi"

The need for education in Afghan society is among the most important and urgent issues that must be addressed, particularly for those children and youth who have been deprived of their right to receive formal education, as well as for inexperienced teachers in remote areas. Education is also one of the most essential pillars of SDO, because a society which has highest illiteracy rate in the world cannot become socially and economically self sufficient without education. We believe that without appropriate education, we will not be able to carry on towards social, economic and political improvement with peace and tranquility. In such a situation, how can people have self-dignity and be empowered enough to help themselves?

Peace Building:

Blood cannot wash out blood. "Afghan Proverb"

According to peacebuilding practitioners, sustainable peace is not simply the absence of violence, but the absence of those unjust factors from which violent conflict erupts. After almost thirty years of war, Afghanistan risks becoming even more deeply entrenched in a culture of violence as it rebuilds itself politically, economically, socially and spiritually. Poverty, unemployment, drought, unequal distribution of natural resources, and land disputes account for many conflicts, which are then exacerbated by other sociopolitical factors such as political extremism, warlordism, discrimination on the basis of ethnicity, religion, and gender, as well as the promotion of armed retribution as a viable means of justice. Such conflicts are expressed as acts of aggression or suppression not only between large political or military factions, but also among neighbors, within families, and between individuals.
As one of a handful of Afghan organizations firmly committed to working for a sustainable and positive peace, SDO prioritizes initiatives that promote a culture of creative non-violence and healing. These initiatives include: training community members in conflict transformation, building the capacity of local peace institutions, and integrating peacebuilding as a cross-cutting issue in all development projects.

Civil society Development:

As we know that there are three fundamental bodies in a state; 1- Government, 2, Civil Society and 3- Corporate (business). Each of these bodies has its own importance in a state and in absence of any of these elements we will not be able to form a developed state, particularly without civil society which covers people based institutions (NGOs, unions, community councils, media and etc). Civil society institutions are the only body in a state that provide oversights to government’s plan and policies and are advocating for justice and equal rights.

Looking at the history of Afghanistan, particularly last 23 years, civil society and corporate had inactive roles in this state. Why? Because, of the prolonged instability of the governments and insecurity in the country. However, it starts to be changed after the establishment of Transitional Islamic State of Afghanistan (TISA) in 2002 and has much improved after first presidential election in October 2004. Since then hundreds of civil society institutions have been formed and the government become likely stable.

Community Health:

A sound mind is in a sound body

Poor medical facilities and pervasive economic problems present significant obstacles to effective health care in Afghanistan. According to the WHO, life expectancy at birth in Afghanistan is 41 years for men and 42 for women, with child mortality rates at 25.8% for boys and 25.6% for girls, as well as one of the world’s highest maternal mortality rates [World Health Organization]. There are two major health problems confronting the people of Afghanistan that are seriously impacting the health status of the population: 1) High Maternal and Neo- Natal Mortality due to primarily to lack of skilled maternal health care services, and 2) High Child Morbidity and Mortality due to five preventable illnesses.
